This research project is a study of the uses and meanings of the word “crusade” in the late middle ages through the study of two corpus of documents:

  • The manuscripts British Library, Egerton 1500 and Add 17920 of Paolino de Venezia’s compendium, a visual and charted universal history. It grants an important place to the history of the crusades and uses –though not systematically- the word cruzada. Produced in and for papal entourage in the beginning of the 1320’, it can shed a light on how crusade and crusade history were perceived at John 22nd’s curia in relation to on-going crusading project in the East.
  • Many French and English chronicles written between the end of the 13th and the beginning of the 14th century relate crusading expeditions whether to the East or in the West. An examination of the vocabulary used to designate these military undertakings under the light of linguistics theories can help understand better how the crusade was conceptualized: what was considered as a crusade, what was not and why.

Apart from articles and conferences for specialized and non-specialized audiences, the project aims at organizing a conclusive conference on the history and developments of the word crusade up to present days. The conference will be held in Stockholm on September 14th and 15th 2020.
